Southwest Washington between I-5 and the coast is still undiscovered. When you visit here, you will see the Columbia River almost exactly as Lewis and Clark saw it. Today there are 40,000 acres of national wildlife refuges in the estuary, a perfect setting for paddling or just imagining. Skamokawa is a tiny town on the National Historic Register, a turn-of-the-century village that was once land-locked and still retains the energy of the fishing and farming that drew immigrants here. The county has no stop lights, but boasts a dozen beautiful B&Bs.
