With 15,000 inhabitants Bayeux is just a small town, although it is the capital of the Bessin region. The main reason to come here is the world famous Bayeux Tapestry. Famous all over the world, the Bayeux Tapestry is in fact a XIth century linen hanging, embroided with various colored wools. The impressive size of this tapestry - 70m long and 0.50m high - along with its considerable artistic and historical merits, make it a unique and worldly renowned masterpiece. Similar to a picture book, it shows through successive images the Conquest of England by William, Duke of Normandy, who became William the Conqueror, King of England, after the famous battle of Hastings in 1066. The beautiful work of this embroidery (probably crafted by English priests), through its numerous details and the veracity of a story told with no less than 58 episodes, is quite a revelation in terms of understanding the way of life in the XIth century. Open every day (except on the 25th of December and the 1st of January, as well as the mornings of December 26th and January 2nd).
Bayeux offers many possibilities for excursions to the Landing Beaches, chateaux and abbayes, Channel Islands the Mont-Saint-Michel, and so on ...
