Capital of the Ancash department, Huarez is an important tourist destination. The tonw is not very special -most of it was destroyed in the 1970 earthquake- but it is a prime destination for hikers and ideal for climbers. The setting at the foot of the Cordillera Blanca is great . Even if you are not into hiking&climbing yourslef, you should at least go to the Mirador Rataquena where you get a great view of the mountains - it's a one hour walk form the town. But is is worthwhile to continue to Pukaventana, where the views over the valley are astonishing. From town you can make nice daytrips to Willkawain where there is an archeological site and Monterrey which has thermal baths.
