Virgina is one of the most historic of the United states. In 1607 colonists dispatched by the London Company established the first permanent settlement at Jamestown (May 13). The first college was established in Williamsburg, Virginia (William and Mary). Originally admitted as one of the original Thirteen Colonies in 1788. Virginia seceded in April 1861 and was the scene of many major battles during the Civil War, including the final campaigns that led to the surrender of Gen. Robert E. Lee.
Northern Virginia is rich in history as well as the future. You can visit the homes of George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, George Mason, Robert E. Lee, James Monroe, and many other prominent figures in American history. Northern Virginia is rapidly becoming the center of the high-tech industry for the east coast with hundreds of internet companies including America Online.
In Southern Virginia, you won't forget you're in the south. Nevertheless, the culture is as thick as the accent. You'll find beaches, theme parks, and some very good southern cooking. TheĀ Shenandoah Valley is loaded with trails for biking and hiking or even a nice drive along the Blue Ridge mountains. Richmond is the capital and Virginia Beach is the world's longest beach and Virginia's largest city.
