Every year the Burning Man festival is held in the desert in Northern Nevada. It is a week-long, insane counter culture celebration of art, community and technology.. See the Black Rock City section for more info.
The story goes that Nevada became a state during the Civil War because the Union needed the silver from mines such as Virgina City (just east of Reno) although the truth has more to do with needed electoral votes than heavy metals.
The split between the urban Clark County ( Las Vegas) and the rest of the state to the north is exhibited through a number of ongoing rivalries such as in high school sporting events and music competitions. It is perhaps most obvious between the two universities: UNR in Reno (the Wolf Pack, its colors are silver and blue) and UNLV in Las Vegas (the Runnin' Rebels, its colors are red and silver.)
Virginia City is the town where it all began for Nevada. Located on the eastern slopes of the Pine Nut Mountains, silver discoveries in 1859 pushed the area to the forefront as people flooded into the new territory. During the 1860s Virginia City boomed to the extent it was considered the interior elegant partner of San Francisco. Millionaires were made overnight from mining stock speculation.
Virginia City was granted the Dozen Distinctive Destination award in 2009 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation for the preservation of its historic architecture. Locations such as the 1875 B Street House Bed and Breakfast reflect the elegance that Virginia City enjoyed during its heyday. Walk the board sidewalks of C Street where such notables as Mark Twain and Dan DeQuille entertained readers with their unique western commentary. The town hosts many events throughout the year and costumed docents hold shootouts on the streets. Truely a wonderful tourist destination for the whole family.
