Massachusetts, at the heart of New England, is probably more 'old England' than any other state in the U.S. Rural villages like Old Deerfield and Sturbridge Village, and seaside towns like Marblehead and Plymouth bring the18th century to life.
Boston, also known as Bean Town from the colonial custom of eating baked beans for Saturday dinner, is the capital of the state and one of the oldest cities of the country. Walking along the Freedom Trail in downtown Boston, you pass the Old South Meeting House, Old State House, Faneuil Hall, Paul Revere House and Old North Church and gives one a feeling for the history of the American fight to promote ideals of freedom of speech, religion, government, and self-determination.
Boston has also been called the Hub of the Universe for its fine museums and well educated populace. It is home to over 50 colleges and universities and Harvard University and Mass. Institute of Technology are just across the Charles River in the city of Cambridge.
There are many outdoor activities in Massachusetts, from swimming of Cape Cod's sandy beaches on the east coast, to hiking the
Appalachian Trail in the west of the state.
