Azerbaijan is a small country on the Caspian Sea. Until 1991 it was part of the Soviet Union. It borders on Armenia, Georgia, Russia and Iran, but culturally speaking it probably has the closest ties with Turkey. The Azeri language is a lot like an archaic form of Turkish. Iran has a large Azeri Community as well.

Baku the capital is the best place to start exploring the country. The city has a strange kind of charm. It is old, a bit run down and dirty (the beaches are very dirty actually) but once you accept this you will surely love it.

There are a few good beaches on the Caspian coast, especially in the direction of the Iranian border.

The hinterland of Baku is mountainous. To cross for Baku to Tbilisi in Georgia is a great experience. It would take you over high passes and through gorgeous valleys.
