Mostar is administrative, economic and cultural seat of Herzegovina. The multiethnic character has been preserved, in spite of ethnical cleansing which has been effectuated during the war conflicts.
Before the war Mostar was famous an important touristic detsination with a large number of cultural-historical monuments, among them the Old Bridge, built in 1566.
In 1993 against Mostar a lot has changed. Numerous structures of exceptional architectural value have been destroyed including the bridge. Slowly the most important structures are rebuilt but it will take a while before Mostar is abck to its old self. Meanwhile the ruins of the bridge remain an important symbol of the war.
The tourist office found us a double room at the historic Muslibegovic House for about $80 (singles about $40) a night, based on current exchange rates. The Ottoman-style home is on the east side of the river, a few blocks away from a lively commercial district with shops, cafes and restaurants. Our room had a modern private bath and Turkish-style beds. Muslibegovic house is a national monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina which is the monumental and the most beautiful residence of living architecture of ottoman period in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Build before 300 years a go, where the central residence was built on 1871. This year is opened for the first time for visitors an used as an accommodation which shows and presents way of living of Herzegovinan families in ottoman period.
