You cannot leave without visiting the Panama Canal on the Atlantic Side, which has the Gatun Locks (with a Visiting Center) along with the impressive Gatun Dam and the ruins of Fort San Lorenzo, a former defense site built by the Spanish Settlers in the year 1582, at the mouth of the Chagres River.
