Halles history is closely connected with salt production. The nearby river Saale, one of the important tributaries of river Elbe, transported Halles most important treasure, the white gold of the Middle Ages. More than 1000 years the town of Halle was founded which is today with 260.000 inhabitants the biggest city of the Federal State of Saxony-Anhalt. Five towers dominate the city centre, the Market Place, as the distinctive features of the town. These famous five are: the two Hausmannstürme of the church on the Market Place called Unser Lieben Frauen, the two blue towers, as well as the free standing red tower. From all the four directions this silhouette is visible to any visitor to Halle even today.
