  • description of surrounding area: Built around 1750 and listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Waterloo is a highly significant brick plantation house, erected by Henry Waggaman, a prominent Somerset County landowner. This pre-Revolutionary war mansion was one of the focal points of life on the Eastern Shore. The three-story Flemish bond brick dwelling is distinquished by glazed header checkerboard patterns and distinctive quoins on three principal corners.

In the nineteenth century the property was owned by several prominent local families, including the Teackles, Rigginses, Handys and Wainwrights, until 1864, when the Somerset County government purchased this Georgian style house for use as an almshouse. The County retained ownership of the Monie Creek property until 1948, when Waterloo once again became the property of a private owner
