General Information

On the edge of Haarlem and near Amsterdam and Schiphol airport lies the idyllic town of Spaarndam. A centuries-old typically Dutch village with a town centre where time stood stillIn the heart of the old centre of Spaarndam is a house with a rich history. It once housed an inn, but soon became the local town pub ?De Telescoop?, or the telescope, named for the beautiful view it offers across the River IJ to the Zaan region. In 1950 the home was transformed into a Youth Club. The old attic, where once youngsters played handball, has now been converted into three spacious and luxurious bedrooms. And the first floor is no longer used to stage plays, but instead serves as a very welcoming guest area with a large table where the regulars are served their breakfast! Spaarndam has a rich fishing history and is famous for the story of Hansje Brinker. Hans Brinker was a hero of note. Mary Mapes Dodge immortalised the little fellow from Haarlem in her book entitled ?Hans Brinker and the Silver Skates?. The story recounts how, when heavy storms caused a hole in a dike at Spaarndam, the legendary son of a lockkeeper cleverly plugged the hole with his finger, thereby saving his village from flooding! This resulted in a beautiful statue in honour of Hans, on the exact spot where his heroic deed took place.
But the bronze sculpture of Hansje Brinker is not the only point of interest in this picturesque dike village. Follow the winding road through the town to the Westkolk and you will find yourself in a place that time forgot. Especially during the summer months, the village hosts many activities like the famous art market!|But the neighbouring Haarlemmerliede and Spaarnwoude, too, have nice places to visit. The fresh green environment of the nearby recreational area Spaarnwoude offers a host of leisure-time activities. Not only hiking, cycling, or mountain biking, but also golfing, canoeing, climbing, skating and skiing!
The area is also renowned for its fort route along the free-fire zone (The Defence Line of Amsterdam). There are also many cycling and skating routes along Spaarndam, while the nearby area with its many bird species is a true paradise for bird-watchers. While the National Kennemerland Park and the Amsterdamse Waterleidingduinen (Amsterdam water-supply dunes) are only a stone?s throw away. Both are exquisite nature and hiking areas! But there are many more ways to pass the time: you can take a trip to Zandvoort, Haarlem, Alkmaar, Amsterdam, or the Beverwijk Bazaar or even go plane-spotting at Schiphol airport!|De Telescoop has a luxurious communal area where breakfast is served and where you can relax. A special tourist information corner has also been set up here, offering a wealth of information about the activities and places of interest in the region. The breakfast table, the small bar, the impressive bookshelves and the unique chess table complete the picture!
Bedrooms: De Telescoop has three luxury bedrooms, each equipped with a shower, toilet, central heating thermostat and a television/DVD player. Each room has a double bed (which can also be converted into two single beds). Some of the rooms can also be furnished with an extra spare bed.
